Explore Kelowna's Cultural District while waiting for ski areas to open.

Temperatures are beginning to drop in British Columbia’s Thompson Okanagan, and snow is starting to fall. Winter sports enthusiasts are plumping parkas, waxing skis, and reserving rooms in their favorite British Columbia Bed and Breakfasts. Ski areas are preparing to open. With La Nina on the horizon, hopes of an epic ski season are high.

While waiting for the snow to accumulate, guests of Thompson Okanagan Bed and Breakfasts should explore the Cultural District of Kelowna, an area ripe with art galleries, museums, fantastic restaurants, theatres, and shops.

Spend an afternoon at the historic Laurel Packinghouse, home to the BC Orchard Industry Museum, the BC Wine Museum, and the VQA Wine Shop. Learn how beautifully manicured orchards grew out of wide open cattle range. Trace the history of viticulture, here in British Columbia as well as in the ancient cultures of Greece and China. Taste wine at the VQA Wine Shop.

Stroll through the Geert Maas Sculpture Gardens and Gallery, a fabulous indoor / outdoor space that is home to more than 350 pieces by this internationally acclaimed artist. Visit the Kelowna Art Gallery, which features the work of Canadian artists in general and British Columbia and Okanagan artists in particular. Explore art by the Haida, Kwaguilth, Tsimshian, Coast Salish, and other British Columbia and Canadian tribes at Turtle Island Gallery.

Evening entertainment is found at such venues as the Kelowna Community Theatre, the Kelowna Actors Studio, and The Habitat – a place to eat, listen, and celebrate. Step out for an evening of classical music at the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, and enjoy a variety of performances at the Rotary Centre of the Arts, a visual and performing arts centre that both celebrates and fosters creativity.

There is much to do in Kelowna as Mother Nature shifts from fall to winter. Explore the Cultural District. Several of our member Kelowna, BC, Bed and Breakfasts are located close to this magnificent area.
