Gabriola Island, British Columbia Bed and Breakfasts
Gabriola is one of the southern Gulf Islands in British Columbia’s Strait of Georgia – it lies directly across from Vancouver, BC, just off Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. BC Ferries operate between Nanaimo and Descanso Bay, on the island, and floatplanes carry passengers to and from Vancouver.
Gabriola Island has lush forests, miles of sandstone shores with quiet beaches, and a mild climate. The pace of life is relaxed here, and a stay at a Gabriola Island Bed and Breakfast is sure to be peaceful. Come here to unwind.
That said, there is plenty to do on Gabriola Island, BC.
Dozens of petroglyphs have been discovered at Jack Point, Lock Bay and Weldwood - giving Gabriola the apt moniker Petroglyph Island. They date back 2,000 years, and provide a glimpse into the rich culture of the First Nations Tribes who lived here. Visit the Gabriola Museum for more information about the aboriginal people who made this art, along with a general overview of the history of the island.
There is a vibrant arts and culture community on Gabriola Island that hosts several exciting events throughout the year. In cool, misty January, folks flock to the Gabriola Film Festival for “thought-provoking films to stimulate community discussion”. Dancing Man Music Festival in late April gives voice to many talented local musicians, singers and actors. Theatre lovers will want to book a room at a Gabriola Island Bed and Breakfast during the annual Gabriola Island Theatre Festival in August. And a studio tour takes place each year during Canadian Thanksgiving weekend in early October.
Outdoor recreation abounds here, as well. Bring a bicycle to the island in May for the annual Tour de Gabriola, and choose from three possible routes around the island. Or bring a small boat to the annual Shipyard Raid in July – a weeklong staged sailing and rowing race on the Strait of Georgia that is always good fun. Golfing, hiking, or combing beaches for oysters – it’s all here on Gabriola Island.
