Union Bay is a seaside community with a rich historical background that encourages visitors to enjoy great views while discovering the stories of what life was like on the coast a century ago. The fresh seafood found in these communities is shipped and enjoyed nation-wide. Union Bay was formerly a major shipping port (1888 to 1960) for the Union Coal Company mines at nearby Cumberland. Start your visit off with a stroll along Heritage Row, a group of restored historic buildings while enjoying the wonderful views. In Fanny Bay, stop at the Fanny Bay Conservation Unit to learn about the diverse bird life found in the area. Piles of oyster shells are everywhere on the beach - head for any local eatery to savour a true gourmet treat with the famous Fanny Bay oysters! In Royston you can tour over to the harbour where, to protect floating log booms for the Comox Logging and Railway Company, a breakwater was built from the sunken hulks of old Canadian warships and freighters - the hulks can still be seen in the harbour! Union Bay Bed & Breakfasts offer not only excellent accommodation and hospitaliy, but your B&B hosts can tell you all the great Union Bay attractions to visit.
