Lake Country, British Columbia Bed and Breakfasts
The Lake Country of British Columbia is comprised of four distinct communities around Okanagan and Wood Lakes: Carr’s Landing, Okanagan Centre, Oyama, and Winfield. The area is blessed with a sunny, semi-arid climate that draws folks from the other side of the Coast Mountains. Innkeepers of BC Lake Country Bed and Breakfasts welcome one and all.
People are not new to the Lake Country of BC’s Okanagan Valley. While European pioneers first arrived in the late 1800’s, archeological evidence indicates the existence of First Nations settlements from as far back as seven to eight thousand years. The Lake Country Museum in Okanagan Centre is a terrific source of information about the history of the region.
This part of British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley has long been known for its orchards. Indeed, the Lake Country is often is referred to as the “Apple Capital of Canada”. Nowadays, in addition to tree fruit, the Lake Country is produces outstanding wine. Wine Festivals occur throughout the year, often incorporating local art, music and cuisine. Ask the innkeepers of your Lake Country Bed and Breakfast about their favorite local wineries – and don’t leave without a few bottles to enjoy at home.
Of course, outdoor recreation is extremely popular here in BC. The sunny, dry climate seems to draw people out of doors all year long. The dry powder makes for excellent skiing in winter, and the smaller lakes are great spots for skating or ice fishing. Okanagan Lake is a popular spot for boating, fishing and swimming in the summer, but folks who venture near it should be aware of the myth of the Ogopogo – a sea monster said to live in the lake. There have been several sightings over the years, though organized hunts for the creature have been unsuccessful. Bring binoculars!
For less mysterious activities, visit the four towns of the BC Lake Country. There is a large artwalk each September in Winfield, where you will also find outstanding theatre and dance. Carr’s Landing is a lovely spot to enjoy a drink and take in views of Okanagan Lake and surrounding orchards; Oyama is the place to go for golf. Okanagan Centre is home not only to an excellent museum, but many fine restaurants and shops.
